Wolverhampton Arts Centre launches Black Country Youth School of Art pilot this March

Wolverhampton Arts Centre is set to launch a brand new visual arts programme for young people this March, with the introduction of the Black Country Youth School of Art: Semester 1 pilot.

Running from 4–25 March 2026, the four-week evening course is designed for young people aged 11–16 and aims to create an affordable, supportive space where creativity comes first.

Taking place in the Gallery Hall, the two-hour weekly sessions will invite participants to explore drawing, painting and mixed media, while learning how artists develop ideas and express identity through visual language. The programme introduces a wide range of art styles, from prehistoric art through to contemporary practice and anime, encouraging young people to discover what resonates with them personally.

Rather than focusing on technical perfection, the course prioritises confidence, creativity and self-expression. Each participant will receive their own sketchbook, access to a wide range of materials, and the opportunity to create a final artwork on canvas.

Importantly, this is a pilot programme with long-term ambitions. Wolverhampton Arts Centre hopes to establish an ongoing visual arts youth school, supporting creative pathways for young people across the city. Participants will be invited to share feedback and ideas to help shape future semesters.

What participants can expect:

• Exploring art styles from ancient to contemporary

• Filling their own sketchbook with ideas

• Experimenting with drawing, colour and materials

• Creating a final mixed-media artwork on canvas

• Reflecting and sharing ideas in a supportive group setting

The first session on Wednesday 4 March (5.30–7.30pm) can be booked as a standalone taster. Sessions 2–4 are booked together, with discounted pricing available for those who sign up to the full course.
