Between meetings, deadlines and making sure the kettle’s on, our staff are also audience members. These picks are the shows we’d choose to see ourselves, shared in our own words.

I’m Muslamic Don’t Panik

Chosen by: Trevelyan, CEO

“I’m looking forward to the quirky and unclassifiable live theatre show, I’m Muslamic Don’t Panik. It’s a combination of comedy, break-dancing and live sax-playing to explore myths around the Middle East. Also Persian tea and biscuits are promised!”

Culture, politics, movement AND refreshments. Ticks several leadership boxes.

Henry Normal & Jan Brierton

Chosen by: Suzanne, Marketing Officer

“About 20 years ago I was introduced to Pam Ayres and realised poetry didn’t have to be intimidating. It could be funny, sharp, and about everyday life. This feels like it sits in that same space. Accessible, witty, and leaves me feeling a bit cleverer than I actually am.”

Also, (because the marketing team always have to bend the rules and not just pick one)

“I can’t help but love a teensy bit of Zappa (I’ve never ventured beyond the ‘best of’ however so think Peaches en Regalia, Joe’s Garage and Cosmik Debris) so Pygmy Twylyte is also on my list.”

Henry Normal & Jan Brierton

Julian Joseph

Chosen by: Steve Bradley, Jazz Development & Programme Officer

“So hard to pick one from our stellar spring jazz schedule, but I am massively excited about the arrival on February 19 of utter jazz legend Julian Joseph, playing an intimate solo set.

I’ve followed, fanboyed, Julian for 40 years and how well I remember his thunderous, fiercely intelligent contributions to Courtney Pine’s seismic original band, as they carved out new territory for Black British jazz in the mid 80s. Oh, and he was in Branford Marsalis’s group…

Julian has continued to be, arguably, THE voice of jazz in this country ever since, be it through his illustrious career as bandleader, or through championing the genre as a Radio 3 broadcaster and in education. A genuine legend! He will truly be elevating the profile of our great venue. Sending it through the roof, in fact.”

The jazz programming and development officer has picked jazz. He’s also not wrong.

Jack Rhodes

Chosen by: Hollie, Front of House Manager

“I am a sucker for magic and it’s something I’ve not seen at the centre before. I’m excited to see his show and maybe learn a neat trick or two from him!”

A fitting choice from someone who understands timing and attention.

Joe Broughton’s Conservatoire Folk Ensemble

Chosen by: Stacey, Marketing Officer

“This was such a joy last year. I always enjoy a gig on our New Horizons Stage, but this one was pure fun from start to finish. A huge, feel-good folk powerhouse with happy vibes with big energy and plenty of dancing! The sound was massive, the musicianship outstanding, and the atmosphere infectious, so if you want an uplifting afternoon that leaves you buzzing, this is the one!”

If anyone knows Stacey, it’s no surprise she picked the most joyful option. She’s joy wrapped up in a person.

Huw Warren’s Choro Choro Choro

Chosen by: Chris, Facilities Manager

“What’s not to love about Latin American music. This will be very special.”

Concise and confident. No notes.

Stuart Maconie – With A Little Help From Their Friends

Chosen by Rachel Winsper, City of Youth Culture: Visual Arts Trail Producer

“I’m really excited about the Stuart Maconie event – With a little help from their friends. I adore listening to him and Mark Radcliffe on 6 music, so looking forward to hearing what he has to say on the Beatles – I’m sure it will be brilliant :)”

A solid choice from someone who appreciates a good story told well.
