Two standout events take place at Wolverhampton Arts Centre this October during Black History Month.
On 5 October, the theatre fills with laughter as COBO: Comedy Shutdown Black History Month Special brings some of the UK’s sharpest stand-up talent to the stage. Kat B, Loyiso Gola, Kyrah Gray, Sikisa and Limahl Germain lead the line-up for a night of unapologetic humour, quick wit and brilliant storytelling. COBO has become known for championing comedians who connect with audiences from all backgrounds, and this special promises to be a joyful, no-holds-barred celebration of Black comedy at its best.

On 18 October, music takes the spotlight with Grace Will Lead Me Home. This moving production explores the life of John Newton, writer of the hymn Amazing Grace, and its inextricable links to the transatlantic slave trade. Performed by Angeline Morrison, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, Jon Bickley and John Palmer, the show combines traditional and newly written songs with historical texts, creating a piece that is as thought-provoking as it is beautiful. Praised by The Guardian, Mojo and Songlines, it has been called “stirring and imaginative”, a work that speaks to both the past and today’s legacies of colonialism.
