THEATRE REVIEW: A DALES WAY presented by Studio 61
Wolverhampton Arts Centre — Thursday 25th June
Rating: ★★★★★
“A masterfully timed piece of theatre that kept the audience completely hooked from start to finish.”
The auditorium of the Wolverhampton Arts Centre was packed with anticipation on Thursday, 25th June, for the performance of A Dales Way. What followed was a masterfully timed piece of theatre that kept the audience completely hooked from start to finish.
The play moved at an excellent pace, building tension seamlessly with every scene. During the performance, the auditorium was deadly silent, with the entire crowd captivated by the drama and storyline unfolding on stage. The plot was a brilliantly constructed maze of twists and turns, full of revelations that I genuinely didn’t see coming. Rather than tying up loose ends in a predictable manner, the production concluded with a fantastic, open-ended finale that left a lasting impression—so much so that the company I attended with were still eagerly debating the plot’s twists and turns well into the following day.
The principal actors anchored the story with exceptional gravity. In particular, the older actors portraying Jane and Eric delivered a wonderful stage performance. Their onstage rapport felt incredibly natural, carrying the easy familiarity of a real-life couple. Their delivery was entirely authentic and true, grounding the high-stakes mystery in a relatable, human reality.
A massive factor in the play’s unpredictable nature is its unique writing process. The decision to have two authors write alternate chapters is a fascinating concept that completely paid off. This structural choice added a constant sense of intrigue and suspicion, as the shifting creative perspectives kept the audience entirely off-balance.
I thoroughly look forward to a subsequent episode of this story or any future collaborations from these incredibly talented writers.
