Art Lab FAQ
Who is Art Lab for?
Art Lab is open to any young person aged 11—16, living or going to school in Wolverhampton.
Is the club completely free and are resources provided?
Yes.
Do young people have to attend all the sessions?
Yes, Art Lab is a programme of arts activity and not a drop-in club. Although, we realise some members may miss sessions due to family holidays or illness. However, if attendance drops below 70% members places may be withdrawn.
Do young people need to be ‘good’ at art to join?
No, the club is for all young people interested in visual arts. Utilising art as a form of expression, exploration and communication, the club supports young people of all abilities and aptitudes and we focus on creating a ‘safe’ space for young people to interact with each other in a positive way.
What kind of arts take place at the club?
We focus on hands-on visual arts activities (drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, photography etc.). We don’t have the resources for any digital arts or digital media equipment.
What can I expect as a young person with Special Educational Needs (SEN) or Neurodiversity?
We strive to be a inclusive space. We understand that ‘art-making’ looks different for everyone. Whether you need to wear headphones, work in silence, or move around the room to think, you are welcome here.
How often do we meet, and for how long?
Excluding term-time, every Saturday from when the programme starts until the finish in July. Sessions are 10.15—12.30.
Later in the programme, session times maybe be extended. However, it won’t be mandatory for young people to stay longer. These extended sessions will be something the young people can opt into, sessions that provide greater opportunities for further skill development in particular areas of interest such as drawing, ceramics or printmaking. Visits to art galleries may also need a later pick-up time for the time to travel to and fro. These visits will also be optional.
How does my young apply?
Young people must first sign up for a creative taster session to meet our leaders and see if the club is the right fit for them.
Can parents attend?
Parents are more than welcome to attend the taster session. However, once a young person joins the club, the sessions are just for young people.
What happens after the taster session?
Following the session, if the young person wants to be considered for a place, you’ll be invited to submit an application to join. Final places will confirmed shortly after all the tasters, to ensure a great experience for our small club moving forward.
