Brothers John-Paul and Gary Hughes formed Helicon in East Kilbride, Glasgow, Scotland. Known for the intensity and energy of their live shows, their sound blends psychedelia, electronica, guitars and sitars with a spirit of counter-cultural experimentation.
Since signing to Fuzz Club in 2017, their music has featured on BBC Radio 6 Music, and they’ve recently collaborated with Barry Burns (Mogwai), Chris Geddes (Belle & Sebastian), Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3 / The Brian Jonestown Massacre/ Spiritualized / Dead Skeletons), and Mark Gardener (Ride).
Their 4th studio album, ARISE, a collaboration with LA-based artist and DJ AL LOVER, was released on Fuzz Club in February 2026, reaching No.20 in the Official UK Album Downloads Chart.
Filmed around the recording of ARISE, WE SOUND LIKE HELICON is a new 20-minute documentary by filmmaker James Ewen exploring psychedelia and creative collaboration between Glasgow psych-rock and Los Angeles beat culture. The film is available on YouTube and was premiered at festivals and events across the UK, including Kendal Calling and Manchester Psych Fest.
A companion remix album to ARISE will be released in Feb 2027, featuring remixes from members of Mogwai, The Black Angels, Belle & Sebastian, Ride and other international artists and collaborators. The album will be announced and the first pre-release single, Mogwai Remix, out 27th October 2026.
Helicon have toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, including sold-out shows in Glasgow, London, Manchester, Paris and Berlin, alongside multiple performances at Fuzz Club Eindhoven, Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia, Manchester Psych Fest, Edinburgh Psych Fest, Bruges Stellar Swamp Festival, Kelburn Garden Party and Kendal Calling.
